Image above: I was chef in residence at Leighton House a couple of years ago during the Nour festival and one of the workshops was on spice mixtures and I took the opportunity to reorganize my spice cupboard and bought a whole lot of Weck jars. Even though they don’t all stack up perfectly, I love them and I love the fact that they are completely hermetically sealed preserving the spices in perfect condition. They also look great.
The first question you might have after reading the title of this post is: “What is a classic kitchen?” I thought a lot about what makes a kitchen classic as I was looking through our sneak peek archives. And, for me, a classic kitchen is one that is timeless. And so unsurprisingly, many of these kitchen are white (and if they are not white, they are a subtle gray). After all, a white kitchen is pretty timeless. It feels clean (which is how you want your kitchen to feel), yet it also feels unfussy and subtle. But the best thing about a white, classic kitchen is how the look of the kitchen can be transformed by changing small details. So we have some “classic” kitchens that feel a little country, some that feel city, some that feel poppy and some that feel subdued – and that’s what makes the classic white kitchen so great. It can really change with you.
Settled in for about a year, they originally didn’t love the bathrooms, but decided against renovating them. They’re perfectly functional, and they wanted to put their renovation money toward something they’d enjoy more, like brightening the walls and kitchen countertops. Warm modern forms and neutral tones shape the central aesthetic, interspersed with generous pops of color, playful patterns, and expertly-arranged decorative groupings. Despite her decorating prowess, Cristina is firmly function-oriented — unless a piece has a story behind it, it should be useful. She’s not interested in ornaments that don’t serve a purpose, even if that’s just to remind herself and Paul of the journey they took toward finding this home. “After so much searching, we found a place that is ours, to decorate as we please.”
